installing fonts (ultimate)

hi,

how do you install fonts in Vista? I copied a font to Windows\fonts
folder but it's not there.. I'm an admin, I can install any programs I
want (I'm only one who uses my machine so permissions are not an issue
for me..)

Hi,

You don't just copy it to the Fonts folder, you install it there to register
it. From C:\Windows\Fonts, click file/install font and select the one you
copied there.

You may have to right-click an empty spot inside the Fonts folder, and
choose Refresh, to see it. Too, if you're not sure of the actual font name
of the font you have installed, in Details View, select "Font file names" as
one of the columns in order to see the actual file name, versus the font
name. For example, VeraMono.ttf is the file name, but Bitstream Vera Sans
Mono is the font name.

Um...if you mean "copy" to imply using the command-window text command
"copy" I'll agree, but the normal way to bring in a font is to drag-and-drop
it (i.e., copy via the GUI) into C:\Windows\FONTS, an event that
automatically runs the font installation process. That behavior has been
part of Windows since Win95, and continues to work with Vista. No need to
go through the FILE menu, although that also works.

Of course, the FONTS folder has special significance, so if someone has been
playing with the Registry controls or folder attributes all bets are off.
This was an all-too-frequent problem with Win95, where some applications
decided to unset the SYSTEM attribute. The marker for this problem is that
the FILE menu of the Fonts folder doesn't offer the "Install New font..."
option.
