Everytime I try to install this particular update from windows update it fails

I can't tell you what error code it gives because I can't find that
information (anyone know where I should be looking).

I'm am running windows xp with sp2 and all other updates installed

can anyone help me with getting this to install (I don't like automatic
updates always popping up and don't want to have to turn it off)

Thanks

No help here just the same complaint with ten different computers using XP sp2.
Desktops and Laptops.

Four of these computers have no generational relationships to the other six.
(i.e. none of the same software is loaded on them except they have been kept
up to date).

No error message, no error number no information except failed.

I tried direct downloading of the patch and it won't install either. I
tried shutting down anti-spy, anti-virus and firewall. NO JOY!

When KB896688 fails all subsequent installs fail too, thou restart of the
installation usually works without having to reboot.

On the other hand, based upon the dearth of Active-X failing posts, it seems
we should count ourselves lucky!

Pretty sucky release validation testing Bill !!!!

All of them having the Program Files folder moved from the default
value?

> No error message, no error number no information except failed.

Habe a look into the KB896688.log file in the Windows folder.
If you find an error code 0x80242008 and a "Unexpected Error While
Executing Line 1 (Test.IE7InstallBlock.Section ) of PreRequisite"
line in there, you'll have to redirect the Program Files folder
to the default values.

Which AV scanner are you using?

have exactlt the same issue. Running NAV2005 on XP Pro SP2...otherwise
fully uptodate. Win updates just keeps going round in circles.

Did you at least _disable_ NAV before installing any updates?
If not, that's a MUST!

> Win updates just keeps going round in circles.

And what about the Program Files folder? Did you "tweak" Windows
and moved/changed the Program Files folder onto another Partition
than Windows is installed on? If you did, revert the movement and
KB896688 should install fine. As soon as you change/move the
Program Files folder again, WU and AU will offer you KB896688
again...

In three cases (all laptops) the ProgramFilesDir is not touched.

Most of the Desktops are at least dual boot and ProgramFilesDir points to a
mutually accessable location.

Not sure what would happen with the Patch if the ProgramFiles for each OS
was temporarily redirected. Permanent redirection is really not an option
for those development machines.

log file is similar in each:
0.844:============================================ =====
0.844: 2005/10/26 03:00:22.676 (local)
0.844:
D:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\22c734c12 ba2228809e817e4675732a3\update\update.exe (version 6.1.22.4)
0.844: Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE
0.844: Hotfix started with following command line: -q /Z -ER
/ParentInfo:0bd2dc48767d8548a893453eeaf2f482
0.844: Unexpected Error While Executing Line 1 (
Test.IE7InstallBlock.Section ) of PreRequisite
0.844: KB896688 Setup canceled.
0.844: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf00d

As far as AV ... I normally shut them down during updates, and I prefer
downloading the update package, as opposed to update service. Trend Micro on
one, NAV on another, McAfee on most.

Any you've checked the LOG file on every machine (laptop and desktop)
and they are *identical*?

The installation will complete, at least on those showing the error
message you've posted. As soon as you change the ProgramFilesDir to
another partition/folder, WU/AU will offer KB896688 to those machines
again.

I'm afraid you will have a problem with installation/AU in this case.

You did in this case too? Both?

I had a similar problem.

Windows Update identified the Cumulative Security Update for IE for WinXP
(KB896688). It appeared to fail installation. It continued to show up in
Win Updates. Finally, the Update History shows it successfully installed.
However, it continues to show up in the Win Update as requiring installation.
The pending updates icon continues to show up in the task tray and KB896688
continues to show up as a required critical update.

Furthermore, the Update History shows that this same update had been
previously cancelled on the same day that it later shows a successful
installation.

Anybody got any ideas???

Hi

I've solved my problem by redirecting program files to the default place (
C:\ Program Files )

I think I can hazard a guess to why peoples are failing. I think when
windows installs it puts explorer in C:\Program Files, which I then re
directed

I think the updater must be told to look in wherever program files is
redirected to and hence cannot find the correct files to update.

Tery that if it is the case then it isn't very good programming on
Microsofts part

Cheers
