So you want to try to do this using WU?
That's your principal objective?
Did that command work? Did it remove all of the files and all
of the subdirectories in the SoftwareDistribution folder?

I'm not sure what logs that update creates.
Try doing an Explorer search for all files changed on that day.
You can further find files changed within the period that you did
the update by changing the Search results window to View Details
and sorting them by Date Modified. It may be sufficient just to
search for files which have an extension of *.log like that.
Or to find just files which contain that error code enter that
in the word or phrase... field (still limited by the date range).
Make sure that no other options (e.g. size, type, case, etc)
interfere with the remaining generality of your search.
Try extracting from any diagnostics which that procedure uncovers
ones which demonstrate what is happening during your update attempt.

Which file was that exactly? Why not post an excerpt in case
there is something else there that gives someone else an idea
for you?
