Installing a Network Printer on Vista 64

I've got an HP Laserjet 2200D directly connected to a pc that runs Server
2003. That printer is working fine as does printing to it from a couple of
networked pc's running XP Pro. (Port name is DOT4_001.)

However, I've just got a new desktop pc that runs Vista 64 and I'm having
difficulty connecting it as a network printer.

If I go through the conventional route of first automatically finding the
printer on the network then the printer is found OK but the instal fails
when the correct drivers can't be found; if I download the Vista 64 file of
drivers from the HP site and point the printer install to the folder where
the unpacked inf files are, I get another message back saying the correct
driver can't be found.

Can SKS tell me what I need to do to get the printer working from my vista
pc

Tx

Seems like you need the correct 64 bit printer drivers installed on the
Vista computer. Go to the printer manufacturers website to hunt these down.

Interesting. I just installed two network printers on a new Ubuntu 8.04
install with no muss, no fuss, no bother and no additional drivers. The
printers were a HP laserjet and a Samsung color laser.

Hey Rob,
Have you tried it like this?
Control Panel,
Classic view,
Printers,
Right click free space..........Add Printer
Add local printer,
Point it to the right port........next,
Select make and model.......next
Drivers are automatically installed then by vista

This works for me upto installing the drivers, naturally however I dont
have the printer

Hope this helps

For PCL6 the HP file for Vista x64 is HP-UPD4_1PCL6-x64,
or HPUPD41PCL6x64, same file. It's a universal installer that
will detect the printer and install the correct driver. I've installed
a B&W and a color laser using this driver with no problems.
For PCL5, use the HPUPD41PCL5x64 file. There's also a
postscript vesion.

After you download, and extract the files, run the install.exe, and
follow the procedure. If it doesn't automatically detect the printer,
enter its IP address. Besides the driver, you will have the printing
preferences tabs for the particular printer, in the printing window.

Thanks Ian

I got almost to the end.....<but>

I've got the universal driver (64 bit) installed on my workstation. The
printer wasn't found automatically probaby because it is connected to the
server via a usb cable (so has no IP address) - But I was able to pick it
up through the 'printer shares' option with \\Server\Laserjet.

However, when I click 'Check Status', I get the message back 'Unable to
Communicate with the Printer.'

..... and that's as far as I can get.

Any more ideas and support are welcome

Rob

Have you tried printing a test page? You may be able to talk
to the printer, but it may not be able to find you back through
the print server.

I have exactly the same problem and a nearly identical setup. My HP
Laserjet 2200 is connected to a Windows Server 2003 x32 box via a
parallel cable and shared as HPLaser. I try to connect to it from my
Vista x64 box, it sees the share, but cannot find a driver. I've
downloaded the latest x64 PCL 5 drivers from the HP web site and
unzipped them to a local folder on the Vista x64 system. None of the
inf files contains a valid driver, according to the printer setup.
However, if I directly connect the printer to the Vista x64 box it works
correctly. This is not what I want or need - the printer needs to stay
connected to the server and shared from there. Why can't I get this to
work? BTW - the same scenario happens if I try to install an x64 driver
on the server - it says none of the downloaded drivers are compatible...
