Installing a new programme OUTSIDE of VISTA Program Files Director

When trying to re-install a Manufacturer's programme [previous installed
under a Windows XP Operating System PC] onto a brand-new Windows Vista PC -
the DVD refuses to install or activate.
My [major] Software-Manufacturer emailed to instruct: "Do a custom-install
which avoids the Vista standard "PROGRAM FILES" directory because Vista has
"security issues" with any programme that attempts to install itself in the
standard "Program Files" directory.
How can I instruct the READ-ONLY DVD Program-disc to install itself to any
Directory that is OUTSIDE the standard "Program Files" sub-directory of Vista
?

Why didn't you email them back and ask?

I'm guessing, since you weren't bright enough to tell us what program you
are talking about, but sometime during the install there should be a
place to change the location of the install. You may need to choose to
do a "custom" install.

As Kurt said, you usually get that option on one of the dialogs as you
install the program. The installer often (but not always) shows the program
files directory it's going to create and gives you the option eg via a
browse button to specify somewhere else.

Program concerned is "SAGE INSTANT ACCOUNTS". DVD has no
accessability[read-only] and no LOAD TO:- flexibility. Resists the
de-activation of READ-ONLY attribute via DOS.
Stubbornly tries only to install DIRECT onto Program Files sub-directory -
which VISTA refuses to allow and freezes.

There is no dialogue, initially boots direct with 3 Options:
"LOAD : SAGE"
"LOAD : INTERNET BROWSER"
"LOAD : README.FILE"
Choose any of these three and it freezes.!

Ok, well perhaps a workaround would be to install the program as is ie let
it install to the Program Files directory - and then when you run the
installed program, run it 'elevated' ie by right-clicking it and running it
as 'administrator'. That may resolve any issues if the program subsequently
attempts to write to areas it's not supposed to.

Good suggestion Jon, but the installation get as far as accepting the command
to
"INSTALL: SAGE" and freezes; with a belated Vista announcement: "E-Drive
Has Stopped Responding".

Sounds to me that what Sage told you (it IS Sage Accounting you are
installing? Which one?) is a load of rubbish. Sounds to me like Sage hasn't
got it's act together with regards to Vista. You might find that you'd be
better off installing XP in a Virtual Machine and installing Sage on
that....
Never did like Sage, anyway, I found it had some very ODD quirks....

You need to Contact Sage, and speak to a real tech, not a mailbot - I hope
you have a support contract
