"witsend",

Which update were you trying to install?
Was this a Windows Update?
Which operating system are you using?
Windows 98
Windows Millenium Edition
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Server 2003

The error you are hitting translates on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
to: ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_IN_EXE

Please check the following item in your registry. Here's how:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type "regedit" (without the quotes) and press the <Enter> button.
4 a. Once the Registry Editor opens, click File
b. Click Export...
c. When the Export Registry File window opens, go to the bottom of the
window and under "Export range" select "All".
d. In the "Save in:" drop down window, select a memorable directory to
save this backup registry to.
e. In the "File name:" window, choose a memorable name and the date to
help your memory of the event. An example might be: "20050125-RegBeforeFix"
f. Click Save.
5. Still in the Registry Editor window, click the plus sign in front of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
6. Within that directory, click the plus sign in front of SOFTWARE
7. Within that directory, click the plus sign in front of Microsoft
8. Within that directory, click the plus sign in front of WindowsNT
9. Within that directory, click the plus sign in front of CurrentVersion
10. Within that directory, click on the SvcHost folder
11. Look into the right pane for a key called "netsvcs"
12. Double-click the key netsvcs
13. When the "Edit Multi-String" windows opens, scroll through the entire
listing, looking for the following two lines:
BITS
wuauserv
14. If they are not there, add them.
15. Click OK
16. Close the Registry Editor.
17. Reboot the machine.
18. Once the machine comes back up, try accessing
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and see if you can scan and download
updates for your machine.

Let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
