There's a few things you can do, of course circumventing IT's restrictions probably isn't the
greatest idea but that's up to you...
If the computer has been kept up-to-date and has the typical bunch of Microsoft applications
what you can do is install Messenger on a PC where you do have rights (say at home) and then
copy over the \Program Files\MSN Messenger folder from that PC (say to a USB key) and then
just copy that to your work PC and run it.
This is best with version MSN Messenger 7.5, not Windows Live Messenger 8 as WLM has lots of
new dependencies that 7.5 didn't have. You can find 7.5 here if you need to install it to

Another option is to just use another client which doesn't use the standard Windows installer
or is available in just a ZIP format. A few of these clients include:
Miranda (just download the ZIP archive version, extract and run):

Gaim (when asked, install to somewhere other than Program Files, like your Desktop):
