I work at a large company and am not an administrator. Anyone know how I can
install the latest version of MSN Messenger somehow. The version on the
computer is under 5.0 and everytime I try to update, I get an error message
stating that I cannot install as I'm not an administrator.

Greetings,

There's a few things you can do, of course circumventing IT's restrictions probably isn't the
greatest idea but that's up to you...

If the computer has been kept up-to-date and has the typical bunch of Microsoft applications
what you can do is install Messenger on a PC where you do have rights (say at home) and then
copy over the \Program Files\MSN Messenger folder from that PC (say to a USB key) and then
just copy that to your work PC and run it.

This is best with version MSN Messenger 7.5, not Windows Live Messenger 8 as WLM has lots of
new dependencies that 7.5 didn't have. You can find 7.5 here if you need to install it to
get the files:

Another option is to just use another client which doesn't use the standard Windows installer
or is available in just a ZIP format. A few of these clients include:
Miranda (just download the ZIP archive version, extract and run):
http://www.miranda-im.org/download/

Gaim (when asked, install to somewhere other than Program Files, like your Desktop):
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/g...1.exe?download

Hi,

The login process has changed a bit, so depending on what the problem is, it may be fixed in
8.1.
