I bought a couple of old Windows 98 programs for $1 each and wonder if
there is some trick to install them on Vista.
Would it help to try doing it in SAFE MODE or DOS for example?

You can try running in a compatibility mode if you have no issues installing
the application first.

Another solution would be to run Virtual PC 2007 (free download from MS) and
install Win 98 if you still have a copy laying around.

Not only does Virtual PC work well, it's kinda fun to have some older OS's
to play around with.

Compatability mode is used to run applications
but not to install them. So if the applications won't install, they won't
install.

BTW: Vista does not have a DOS mode, no version of NT ever did other than an
emulated command prompt.

The idea of running the apps in win98 running from within a virtual machine
should be just fine
