I've tried numerous times to install these updates, but it continually fails.
I've registered the Wups2.dll file and installed the Windows Update Agent,
but still no luck. Any suggestions.

Yeah...
What are you talking about?

This is a general Windows Update newsgroup. You could have Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (some version of it),
Windows XP (some version of it), Windows Vista (some version of it) or even
Windows 7 (some version of it.) Not to mention the server operating
systems. Then you have service pack level and 32-bit or 64-bit. I'd at
least start with that.

Follow that up by providing more details on which specific updates you are
referring to. Usually they have (at least) identifying numbers in this
format: KB######. Try throwing some of those out there as well.

Maybe then elaborate on what you have tried - be specific. There's no
word-limit here. This isn't twitter and you are not texting on a cell
phone. Be descriptive - paint a picture with your words since most of us
here cannot see your actual screen. At least give any errors/messages you
get word-for-word. The more detail - the more likely someone will recognize
your problem and be able to assist you.

Now - I'll take a wild stab at what OS you have: Windows XP. Won't even try
to guess at the version (Home, Professional, Media Center, TabletPC, etc) or
service pack level - but I will throw out that I think you have a 32-bit
version.

Given my assumptions, here is what I suggest - all of it - step-by-step.
Doesn't matter if you have done it before, do it again to follow along with
the steps. ;-)

Verify what specific version of Windows XP you have first...

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version" will
give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this message
verbatim. ;-)

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

Reboot.

Search your registry for %fystem and replace the "f" with an "s". May be
three or four matches, may be none. You may even have to take ownership
of the keys in order to make the change.

Then...

Ignore the title and follow the sub-section under "Advanced Troubleshooting"
titled, "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377
*will take time
(** Ignore the last step - you should have SP3 installed, but you shouldn't
correct it at this point if you do not - wait until you fix this issue
first.)

Reboot.

Download/install this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

After installing, do the following:

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap.exe" g!
--> Click OK.
(The quotation marks and percentage signs and spacing should be exact.)

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Reboot.

and...

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Follow these steps...

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Reboot.

CHKDSK
How to scan your disks for errors
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
* will take time and a reboot.

Defragment
How to Defragment your hard drives
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
* will take time

Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.) Never get hardware drivers
for hardware that was not created/sold by Microsoft from Microsoft.

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a
CUSTOM scan...

Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time. Rebooting as needed.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or
"Windows Live" ones for now. I would completely avoid the
Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install
Internet Explorer 8 at this time.

Do all of that in the order given. Do not skip a step because you
think/know you have done it before.

If you experience any errors, get any strange messages, want further
explanation for any step - come back. Post messages word-for-word.
Describe exactly what you see around the message and what you did right
before that may have caused the message.

In the end - come back - respond with your results.

hello sailor and wjg.
sometimes failed updates were caused by not checking the check box of the
license agreement, go to microsoft website abd type the error code to the
search box and and download the error code, next, go to windows update and
try to install again. goodluck!

Hey PA Bear and Shenan, if you want more information you can at least ask it
in a polite manner.

To answer you questions, like a lot of other folks, I'm trying to download
update KB953297 and keep getting error code 0x64C.

Here's my system information: Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_gdr.090804-1435
: Service Pack 3)

Also, I've run my service provider's (Telus) anti-virus, spyware, etc. and
it doesn't detect anything. I've also de-fragged the hard-drive, cleaned up
the cookies and gotten rid of most .tmp files. Still the same thing.

I was very polite. I did not harrass in any manner. I merely asked the
obvious and pointed out the obvious and then gave advice based off what you
had given thus far. If you thought that was not polite - then you have been
quite sheltered from public forums, in my opinion. ;-)

Do the list I gave you. It will likely find things you did not expect to
find, fix them and then you may be able to move on.

I'll repeat that list - since I have snipped it above:

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

first.)

Reboot.

Download/install this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

After installing, do the following:

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap.exe" g!

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Reboot.

and...

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):

.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root

For more direct answer to your issue:

Have you reviewed the KB article associated with the update?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953297
(Specifically - the "Known Issues" section?)

I'd suggest:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/
Method 1.

Did you check you had the prerequisites covered (from the article above):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-54D056D6F9F4

Have you attempted to download, save and install the update manually for
your Operating System version/service pack level?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms09-061.mspx

After doing all of that - have you used the "How to obtain help and support
for this security update" from the KB article?

"For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft

North American customers can also obtain instant access to unlimited
no-charge e-mail support or to unlimited individual chat support by visiting
the following Microsoft Web site:

This article might help, although it is for error code 0x643:

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/>

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/

Or you can phone Microsoft (free of charge) for support in installing this
security update:

Please see this page http://members.shaw.ca/dts-l/goodpost.htm for the
information we'd need to be able to assist you properly from the get-go.

Or see http://lmgtfy.com/?q=953297%2B0x64C

Or
