Hello.

is there anyway i can know which service pack i have?

I'm quite unfamiliar with the service packs and i wanted to know if my
files will get erased when i install a service pack(Windows 2000 SP4). On the
first page of the installation wizard, it said "backup your system". is that
necessary?

I would like to know the answer to this also. I just spent several hours
doing Windows XP updating. After I had successfully downloaded and installed
all reported needed updates, or at least after all required updates were
reportedly successfully installed, I went back to the Updates site expecting
to see a "clean" required update list, and it said that NOW I needed to
install XP Service Pack 2!!! It was going to be a 5+ hour down load on my
dail up server. It failed to install, no doubt due to a loss of dial up
connection some time during the process (this happened several times during
the other updates as well, took about 4 restarts to get through them). Can a
Service Pack 2 update be obtained on disk from Microsoft?

Once I install Service Pack 2, will there be a another long list of updates
to it that I will now need to download? Can they be suppplied on disc as well?

Right click My Computer
Click Properties.
The installed Service Pack is listed under "System"

Data and settings should be safe.
The suggestion to back-up is for the remote chance something goes wrong.
You should routinely be backing up important data in case of a hardware or
software disaster.
