Sequence of events:
1. Win XP Home SP 0
problem began with spyware, which I removed [ using spybot 1.3, ad-aware SE,
HiJackThis 1.99, CWShredder, About:buster ].

2. I tried to update to SP1, from the Windows update site, as well as from a
Win XP SP1 update disk, but received an error. In Event Viewer, Windows
Update Agent, Event ID 20, so I renamed C:\Windows\system32\catroot2 to
c:\windows\system32\old_catroot2, & retried the SP1 installation.

3. Re-ran SP1 setup / installation, which results in this error: Service
Pack 1 Setup Error The file c:\program
files\common files\system\ole db\msdasql.dll is open or in use by another
program.

4. Start > run > javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

results: Q823353;Q832894;Q867801

I've tried to download FindnFix.exe, but I can't find it, from searching the
web. Posts at CastleCop, for example point to web pages that are no longer
active.

My question.
What do you suggest, so I can upgrade to SP1, then SP2?

Use tasklist (from your Support Tools) to find out what other task
has that file open. E.g. open a command window and enter:

tasklist /v /fi "Modules eq msdasql.dll"

Note: the /v switch is optional, meaning verbose. Even without it
you should see displayed the name of the program and its PID,
which should be enough for you to decide what to do about it.

Good luck

Robert:
Thanks for the insight. From where do I obtain the "support tools"?
