I tried installing SQL Server 2005 standard on Vista RTM and i get a error
message and it would not let me go any further. The error message says that
the select SQL Server components are not valid for this SQL Server edition or
something like that. I dont remember the exact message. I did not have any
problems installing and running the same on Vista RC1 and RC2. Any quick help
will be appreciated.

The current requirements list does not include Vista. You can try to get it
to work using app compatability but it wouldnt be a supported scenario.

It isn't compatible at the moment. Apparently no one at Microsoft thought
that developers might like to use their flagship development environment,
including their flagship database solution, on top of their new flagship
operating system. This won't make updating your applications for the new OS
complex or anything, dear me no.

But not to worry, just take a look at the new games like Purble Palace.
Isn't that a better use of your time anyway? ;-)

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlonvista.mspx is interesting:

"In an effort to provide customers with more secure products, Microsoft
Windows Server "Longhorn" and Microsoft Windows Vista will only support SQL
Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later when it becomes available. Earlier
versions of SQL Server, including SQL Server 2000 (all editions including
Desktop Engine edition, a.k.a MSDE), SQL Server 7.0, and SQL Server 6.5,
will not be supported on Windows Server "Longhorn" or Windows Vista.
Customers running applications with these earlier versions of SQL Server
should consider evaluating and upgrading to SQL Server 2005, which was
designed to take advantage of the upcoming security and performance
enhancements in the operating environment."

and I quite liked http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa948854.aspx
too. Not.

I did ask about this many months ago on the developer groups. It does
seem hard to believe if true. Apparently, VS2005 is "not fully
supported" either, and some things in VS2005 now require Admin rights
that didn't used to (and should not need to) - so much for improving
security!

But hey don't those purbles look cute...

I just feel relieved that someone has their priorities in the right place
and took care of the purbles first.

You should be able to install it.

Here´s information from Microsoft:

Q. What release of SQL Server 2005 will run on Windows Vista?

A. SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Service Pack 1 will run on Windows
Vista but has known issues with User Access Control. For all other editions
of SQL Server 2005, Service Pack 2 will be required for Windows Vista and
Windows Server "Longhorn" support when those products are released.

If you are still unable to install I would suggest contacting Microsoft
Support.
