Installing update 1/8 - BSOD - Boot disc not found - HELP!!

Just been doing some updates on a desktop running XP. It offered to do
updates on shutdown. Started 1/8 which took a while and then BSOD with error
message something about atapi.sys I think. PC will now not boot with 'boot
disc not found' error. I'm at a loss to know where to start with this. Any
help gratefully received.
