hello,

i have got some problem with installing the KB939653-update on vista
ultimate 64-bit. Windows update shows the error 80070246 and some others in
the logfiles. i tried some things to get it working, but nothing helps.

- deactivated the internal vista-firewall (i do not have an extra one)
- deactivated the antivirus-software (avira)
- deleted the content of the SoftwareDistribution-Folder in the Windows-Folder
- downloaded the patch myself from the microsoft download-page

I really do not know whats messed up in vista or with the patch, but i am
sure i do not damage windows or something

Fluffy,

Did you ever get this update to install?

I too have problems with installing kb939653(x64) on Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
This is a very recent clean install with no other software installed. I have
tried numerous "fixes" to get it to install, such as renaming
SoftwareDistrubution, Catroot2, using FSutil program, Windows Update Agent
3.0 x64, and probably one or two others I have forgotten to mention. This
happens whether I use the standalone .msu or Windows Updates. And more
importantly it happens if this is the first update attempted after a clean
install of Vista (that is after installing Windows Update Agent 3.0 x64).

I have been in contact with Microsoft, and as yet I am no closer to a
solution through my own endeavours or by the good people at Microsoft.

The error that floors me is 0x80070057 and the standout comment in the
Windows Update log is -

Installicability

I begin to wonder if this may be hardware related, or a combination of both,
or just that this update is not applicable to my system, or just that it is
faulty. Ignoring this kb939653(x64) update I am able to install all the
other recommended and Important updates successfully. Still missing out on a
"Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer" is not something I want to
do, as expect that the next ""Cumulative" that comes along will suffer the
same fate?

I have fixed my problem with this pesky update. I have downloaded it
(several times) from various sites including Windows Updates, Windows
Catalog, and Microsoft Download Center.

Finally I installed Firefox, with the intention of forgetting about using
IE7 as I couldn't update it. In one last desperate effort and using Firefox,
I went to Microsoft Download Center and downloaded this update for about the
sixth time, manually installed it, and in it went without any problems.

Obviously file corruption, somewhere along the line was my problem, or maybe
using Firefox scared IE into acceptiing the update, whatever it's in now.

The only question remaining is do I keep Firefox, IE7, or both?

hi mike,

no it is still messed up at my pc. i am in contact with microsoft too and
waiting for an response after i send a mail with the windowsupdate.log and
systeminformations generated by msinfo32.exe.

i think its some bug in vista or with the update agent. in the first answer
from microsoft i got the suggestion to disable all non-microsoft services and
startup-programs, but it didn't work. the same error as before.

i will try downloading the update with an alternative webbrowser, too.

I hope you have success with Microsoft. I used the phone assistance path,
and had the person at Microsoft remotely check out things on my machine via
their "Easy Assist" remote assistance program. They were not able to do
anything for me which is understandable, my problem being one of file
corruption.
