Installing Updates Foreever

I have ultimate installed on my year old Dell laptop with 2 gig of ram.
Lately, if I download updates, upon reboot it goes into the Installing
Updates mode and this goes on and on and on. It prevents me from using the
laptop for perhaps 20 min each time. Any suggestions?

In checking it actually says "configuring updates". It is now 20 min since
the last reboot and it is still configuring. Gerrrrr.

It is out of warranty. And if I returned it I would miss all this Vista
Ultimate fun.
