I did that, except Vista seemed to prefer claiming itself to be on the
"C" drive, regardless of the drive/partition I installed it on.
If you do that, either operating system you boot will appear to be on
what it calls the "C" drive while it is running, the "other" will be on "D".
That may be exactly what you say you would like.
I didn't like that, so I installed Vista on the first drive/partition,
then reinstalled XP on the next one, telling XP it was on "D".
Some sort of boot manager has been part of every Windows-NT version.
To install to other than the default drive/partition, select the advanced
option during install, where the on-screen instructions invite you to
select a different drive or partition.
If you install only a single operating system, the OS-choice question
will naturally be suppressed.
You'll see the choice only after you have installed a second OS.
