Have XP Pro installed on a Raid 0 pair of samsug hd.During installation
created a partitions of 15gb C:\ System, f 40gb D:\ Programs and a third
70gb E:\ Data unassigned 140gb.
Because the C:\ has turned out to be too small and causes XP problems -
cannot expand C:\, therefore not practical to conduct a upgrade.
Plan to install a new Sumsung 1Tb ( faster) Hd and install Vista Ultimate
on that disc.
2 questions,-
1.0 The pros and cons of partitioning the new HD
2.0 Any problems associated with keeping Xp installed with Vista installed
Thanks

If you specify a different partition when installing Vista, then the
installation process will take care of setting up the appropriate
dual-boot configuration. Upon rebooting you will be presented with the
Vista Boot Menu, wher you can choose to boot into Vista or "Previous
Operating System". Under these conditions, it is hard to remove the XP
installation at a later date without killing the Vista install also.

What some people do is completely remove their XP hard disk, and then
install Vista onto a new hard disk, as though its a new computer. The XP
boot partition is thus protected from being modified by Vista during
installation, and you can use the boot options of your system BIOS to
determine which hard disk to boot from. It is then also far easier to
remove XP by simply booting into Vista and formatting the XP drive.
Which is likely what you'll do, as you'll find you hardly ever boot into
XP, and will want to recover this wasted disk space.

You'll want at least 80 - 100 for the Vista installation. Personally, I
don't use partitions. I have a dedicated 80GB drive just for my C:, and
the remainder of my physical drives are for data. All my profile folders
(Documents, Pictures, Music, etc) are redirected to other drives. That
way if something screws up the C: partition table, I don't loose
anything else other than the OS and a few e-mails.

I'm running both XP and Vista on my computer without issue. I've installed
Vista after XP, and upon boot, I get an option to boot to "older version of
Windows" or Windows Vista.

Hi, Brahman.

I endorse dzomlija's suggestions.

I've been dual-booting for a decade or more, since WinNT4/95, and especially
all through the Vista beta period, with as many as 8 OSes at one point. But
now I'm down to just Vista Ultimate x64 - and 3 others (VU x86, WinXP x86
and WinXP x64) that I seldom boot at all anymore. If I were in your
situation, I might well follow djomlija's plan so that, after a "getting
acquainted with Vista" period, I could delete WinXP without having to
reorganize my Vista setup.

I've always used Microsoft's dual-boot system, which always begins the
startup process in the System Partition (usually the first partition on the
first hard drive), then branches to the Boot Volume (where the big \Windows
folder is) for the chosen OS. That way, I don't have to change my BIOS
settings in order to boot the other OS; they both start in the same System
Partition.

My new mobo BIOS lets me choose to boot from a different HD by pressing
<Esc> during POST. With this BIOS, I can use two System Partitions and
easily choose between them on each reboot, so dzomlija's suggestion to keep
using the old HD to boot into WinXP would make sense for my system now - and
maybe for yours, too.

Hi Dzomlija, Peanya and RC White
You all seem to be on the same page - thanks I will follow your suggestions.

Since I posted this question on "Windows Vista General Discussion" and on
"Installation & Setup" I will Cross Post as suggested by RC.

I have one remaing question - how to /or should I partition the 1Tb Samsung
HD.

From NT beta to XP I partitioned C:\ DOS and each OS on a separate
partition( some times 4 or more formated in MSW) and data on a separate
partition for multi boot, failure and backup considerations.

Since Vista will be installed like on a new computer should I create a small
-2gb C:\ paritition which would be System and hold boot files and second
large partition for Vista OS say 200GB and other partitions depending on data
type.
Or
No partitions/
Any suggestions

Thanks again to all
