Sure you can. No problem. I assume you are going to do a fresh install of
XP. Here is a walkthrough on how to do it.

Since you will be using a separate hard drive, you can just skip to the part
where it says to install Windows XP and continue from there. You have to add
it to the boot menu.
All in all, it's not that difficult.
