Does this software really need to be installed?

Only if you have RAID set up, and want to mess around with it.
I have RAID 0, but have never used the program to do anything except to view
the setup.

I have been using my new i7 computer for two months now without installing
"Intel Matrix Storage Manager". Heck, I never even heard about it until I
read your post. I have just downloaded it and installed it and ran the
application to see what it was all about.

If you have raid already set up, this program lets your see more details of
your physical hard drives than you can see with device manager or the disk
management console.
You can also use it to create new raid volumes using a GUI from within
Windows instead of the bios screens at computer boot up.

But no, you don't "need" to install it.
