Interesting Point On Cable Internet Speeds

Still playing ( learning ) with the Vista and Dell Inspiron, and made a
interesting discovery today. I was getting speeds about 4200 Kbps on a T/W
cable wireless setup with a distance of 25 feet from the Linksys to the PC.
Today I moved the Linksys unit about 5 feet from the Dell and ran an
ethernet cable to replace the wireless adaptor. Now the speed tests are
showing results of 7000-7100 Kbps. OK so its not the newsflash of 2008 but I
still am excited! I didn't know that wireless reduced speed by so much. I
must tell you that the upload speed is still unimpressive, showing about (
sigh ) 375 Kbps on the results. I know this isnt a Vista issue so please
excuse the improper posting but I thought someone might find it useful! TJ

It does indeed make a difference! I have to relocate my connection from the
basement to the main floor; in the meantime I'm running wireless, and the
difference is certainly very noticeable. 8( Now all I have to do is get my
ADSL connection relocated.... Which unfortunately for me, means drilling a
hole in the floor!

In fact, the Wiki article you cite notes that at/over 25 feet there is a the
likelihood of a slowdown. Mine, too, is over 25 feet, with a floor in
between. While it's not too bad for browsing, uploading/downloading images
is slower than it should be.

Yes, I had to do some minor RG6 routing to achieve the upgrade but it was
well worth it. I had to run a piece of coax from the outside cable connector
box on the house exterior, thru the brick foundation via a hole I drilled,
under the house and securing it to joists, elude a lot of camel crickets,
( pretend I wasn't scared of them since my son was watching ), then drill
another hole in the flooring and feed it thru up into the bedroom, routing
it thru a rubber floor grommet for extra sealing, then finally mate it with
the Linksys. A tedious 1 hour job but the final outcome was a faster
connection which is very noticeable. TJ

Is there? Seems OK to me. I don't understand the 54 or 11. All I know is
what the speed tests are showing and I am downloading 5 MB files in a
minute. My Limewire downloads are like lightning and YouTube videos are
clear and no jerky motions or chattering. Prior to this cable I had (
shriek ) dial up internet and life sucked. Plus the duo core Pentium
processors and 4-gig ram is a bonus too. Now I feel like a real modern
pioneer. TJ

Instead of drilling holes through floors, you might want to get a book
on fishing electrical wires through walls. With the exception of
paneled of very special wall surfaces, walls are almost always easier
to repair transparently later on if you remove the wiring.

A good idea Bob! I wish I had thought of it. I'll try that 4 sure on the
