Interface IPMI ?

After installation Vista my system works normally but in the Device Manager
under "Other devices" appers two strange devices: Interface IPMI and Serial
Port PCI.
I couldn´t find any drivers for them. I dissabled them and my systems works
fine.
Do somebody knows more about the point for installing them correctly??

Hi Hugo,

IPMI sounds like "Intelligent Platform Management Interface", a standard for
managing network machines - see http://www.intel.com/design/servers/ipmi.
Your machine may have a IPMI Baseboard Management Controller on teh
motherboard, in which case it will show up as a device in Device Manager. If
you need to use the BMC, you would need to obtain device drivers from the
manufacturer of the machine. But if you're not part of a large corporate
network and you don't already have a server management infrastructure, it
probably isn't worth worrying about. Just leave it disabled. Windows will
run fine without it.

The Serial PCI card, likewise, sounds like the machine has a PCI Crad
inserted, containing one or more RS-232 Serial ports. These cards are used
when the motherboard has no built-in Serial Port; or if the machine needs
more serial ports than there are built-in (if you need to run a bank of
modems or TTY terminals, for example). You would need to identify the
specific serial hardware in your machine; then go to teh manufacturer's
website to download drivers for the serial card. If you already have enough
serial ports to get up and running, you can just leave the device disabled;
or, remove it from the machine altogther if you want. Serial comms are
geting pretty rare these days and most people know right away, if the need
more serial ports or not.

In summary, if you don't specifically need to use the se devices, you have
done the right thing - disable the devices, then ignore them.. Vista should
run fine without these devices enabled. If you find you really do need to
use IMPI system management, or more serial ports, look for drivers at the
manufacturer of the hardware.
