Interforest migration with domain name change

Hello all,
I need to migrate my domain to windows server 2008, and change my domain
name in the process. I cannot have any loss time during the process, as I
work for an electric company. I would like to create two forests, establish
a two way tranisitive trust, and slowly move shares over and accounts and
exchange. I've tried to install windows 2000 in a test lab along with server
08, but I cannot establish the forest trust, they never verify, although the
domain shows up in the windows 2000 box, I can't login to it. The account I
created exists in both domains also. I've read the admt 3.1 migration help,
but it doesn't help with creating the forest trusts. Any help or guides
would be great, I've got all this hardware and no os to run it!

Hello Chad,

Forest trusts come first with 2003. So i think you can do only the same between
2008 and 2000 like described here.

Trusts across Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 forests:
Windows Server 2003 forest trusts cannot be created between a Windows Server
2003 forest and a Windows 2000 forest. You can, however, manually create
a trust relationship between any domain in a Windows Server 2003 forest and
any domain in a Windows 2000 forest by using one-way or two-way external
trusts. External trusts are nontransitive and provide for access to resources
in another domain outside the forest that is not already joined by a forest
trust.

Well, could i do this and can you point me to articles on doing each step:
I want to move now to server 2003 to server 08 by first:
Upgrading my forest to 2003 by using a member server and promoting it. By
the way, this is on a cluster(let me know if there are problems with this).
I also have exchange 2000, so will that interfere with anything?
2.
After upgrading forest to server 03, install server 08 on my new blade
server, create a two way transitive trust for admt to begin, and transfer all
objects, to a renamed domain, on the server.

Will i run into problem with exchange during the migration to 2000, to 2003?
Or at any other level. I don't think I will but if you know that I might
please inform. Does that sound like a good idea?

Hello Chad,

Going to 2003 first is a way you can start. Do NOT use a cluster node, just
to promote to DC. DC's on cluster is also a special step, it works, BUT with
some more attention. Do not just promote a cluster node to DC.

DC on Cluster:

Thanks for the documentation. Can you also show me how to go from server
2003 to server 2008? I think from there I can just use admt 3.1 and
transition to all new domain and server. Do you think I would run into any
problems there?

Hello Chad,

You can start here for upgrading to 2008:

Domain upgrade:
