Internal domain is .com and can't access website

I just took over support of a 2003 Std server that was setup by someone else
and they named the internal domain with a .com instead of a .local. This
won't allow us to get to our webpage from inside the network. Is there an
entry I can add to the DNS server on the 2003 box to go to our website?? The
website is hosted by Yahoo! Small business with a storefront. I looged into
the Yahoo control panel but I cannot find the IP address of the webpage. Any
help is appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Eric,

You can create a host record and name it www, then point it to the ip address
of the webserver.

Thanks that's what I was thinking. I was not sure where to add it under the
NDS 'tree'? Is it in the same place as all the A records for my client PC's?

Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by the NDS tree. Did you mean DNS?

As for the A (host) record, simply right-click your domain name in the DNS console, choose New Host (A) record, type in www, and provide the external IP address of the web server.

Hello Eric,

If you mean DNS then yes, choose the zone name(yourdomain.com) and rightclick
etc. as described from Ace.

Yes, I meant DNS. I must have fat-fingered it in a hurry.

Thanks for the replies. Is there anyway to find the IP address the website
is on? I have logged into our Yahoo control panel but I cannot find the IP
address anywhere, the only IP's it lists are for the DNS servers.

Also on the DNS entry is it a www followed by a comma?

Thanks again.

Hello Eric,

Just "www" without the quotes. Did you try to ping the website? Otherwise
ask there support.

YOu can follow Meinolf's suggestions to ask Yahoo support.

Another method is to delegate the www as a child domain under your own internal domain to Yahoo's DNS servers. This of course is the better method, but a bit more complicated.

To achieve this:
run nslookup
nslookup
> set q=ns

yahoo.com

You will get an answer such as this:
Non-authoritative answer:
yahoo.com nameserver = ns8.yahoo.com
yahoo.com nameserver = ns2.yahoo.com
yahoo.com nameserver = ns5.yahoo.com
yahoo.com nameserver = ns6.yahoo.com
yahoo.com nameserver = ns4.yahoo.com
yahoo.com nameserver = ns3.yahoo.com
yahoo.com nameserver = ns1.yahoo.com

ns8.yahoo.com internet address = 202.165.104.22
ns2.yahoo.com internet address = 68.142.255.16
ns5.yahoo.com internet address = 119.160.247.124
ns6.yahoo.com internet address = 202.43.223.170
ns4.yahoo.com internet address = 68.142.196.63
ns3.yahoo.com internet address = 121.101.152.99
ns1.yahoo.com internet address = 68.180.131.16

Then for the 8 nameservers (Yahoo's DNS servers), you will delegate the www child domain as thus:

Right click your domain, new Child delegation, type in www.
Then provide the 8 IP addresses you see above.
No other records are needed to be created.

This is needed because they change their settings periodically, as well as that they have mulitple webservers in a farm hosting their site. This is because of the mass amount of users that access it. I wouldn't doubt that they may have 30+ servers. The delegation will ask their DNS servers for the current www IP address when it resolves it.
