*title*
Last night it was fine, turned it off and went to bed, got up this
morning and turned it on, windows can't find any networks. I click
"diagnose why..." and it says that my laptop doesn't have a wireless NIC
or the drivers are out of date! but nothing changed, and it's not the
router it's working fine.
Hp dv 9000 17" btw
there have been a few other issues for about a month, quick play
doesn't work and WMP won't play audio tracks (dvds still work, oddly
enough) when that started happening I got messages at start up, they
are:
Hp quickplay was stopped working
cvlcap module (or somthing close to that, I forgot the first part, I
know it ends in cap but it might be cvcl or something) has stopped
working
and occasionally it would say the disk defraggmentor was stopped
working even when I'm just browsing the internet and it's not even
open.
those aren't that big a deal, but I really need my NIC working again,
I'm running an Avast! virus scan right now but I don't think that it the
problem.
on a side note, what do ye nerds think of Avast!? being free seems to
good to be true, but I've seen store baught antivirus that is obvisously
much worse (defender pro comes to mind...)

tl;dr
wireless NIC dissapeared,
WMP does play music,
is Avast! any good?

Help, mainly the first one.
This is making me quite dislike Vista...

I can't see it's a Global problem, but I've personally worked on 3
other 9000 series HPs that have intermittent Wireless connectivity.
The NIC just seems to come and go, being available and then in
a few minutes offline. I would contact HP. Hopefully your PC is
still covered by factory warranty.

I have a similar problem.

Go into Device Manager, disable the wireless NIC, then re-enable it. That's
what works with my laptop.

I tryed to get to it on device manager but I couldn't find it, but on
the control panel there is an icon for Hp wireless assistent directly. I
tryed to open it but nothing happens, the loading circle apears next to
the mouse for a split second then noting, and right click>open does the
same thing.
the switch on the fr4ont of the laptop for turning it on/off was a
light next to it to indicate status left with orange is off, and right
with blue is on, but for some reasoneven when I turn is on, the light
stays orange.
in every way I can tell, my computer stopped acknowledging my wireless
NIC's exsistence.

oh, I finished the virus scan, nothing found.

When you open device manager (devmgmt.msc) and look at the Properties of the
NIC, you may see a tab that lets you set the speed and duplex for that. If
so, take it off 'auto-negotiation' and set to to the lowest and test, then
bump it up as long as it keeps working without fail. Eventually, you should
get to 100 Mbps full duplex to stay. Have no idea why this works, but it
worked for several people I have suggested it to. it's something about Vista
'learning' the connection, whatever that means.

Have you tried System Restore? Contacted HP support?

I can't find the NIC on the device list, where should it be under and
what might it be called. It isn't an issue of not connecting to my
network but it can find any at all and doesn't even think that there is
a NIC.

and system restore is not something I'd want to do, for some reason my
comp doesn't automatically set restore points so it has been a long time
since I made one.

Hi Timothy,

If the wireless does not show in device manager and the detect new hardware
doesn't pick it up, you need to check that the device is still enabled in
the system BIOS. If it is, and it's still not recognized by Windows, then
it's likely damaged and will require a technician to replace (most likely
integrated into the motherboard). Hopefully your system is still under
warranty.

If System Restore failed to create automatic backups, you should have looked
into that sooner. Have you checked the system for malware?

Device Manager can hide devices, so it might be found by turning off that
setting. (View menu). When you have found "Terado Tunneling" you are near
it. I don't know if my speed fix if available to you, but I thought it was
worth mentioning, since it's the only thing that got me online at all.
