Internet and network connection

I've just recently encountered a problem connecting to the internet with
my notebook and when I check to see what was wrong my computer says I'm not
connected to any networks. So when I try to connect my computer doesn't show
my wireless network it says a cable is not plugged into the network adapter
'local area connection". However everything is plugged in and my mom's
notebook has no problem.
Also it says that my computer doesn't have a wireless adapter installed
and configured but it does and when I go to the properties it says the device
is working properly. I don't know what to do anymore. I've restarted my
computer and unplugged and replugged the cable and disabled and enabled the
adapter. Please can someone help me. Thanks

You didn't mention System Restore.

If you have a restore point dated prior to when this trouble began,
use it.

I have had this trouble too on my Desktop. I have tried to use a restore
point... but my computer is saying that it does not have one.

If you are trying to use wireless, you should not have the cable
plugged in, and it the wired adapter should be disabled to avoid
conflict. If you can plug in, you should use it, it's a lot faster
anyway.

Have either of you gone to the wireless adapter manufacturers website
to see if there is an updated driver? If not, download the latest one
anyway and install it. Your installed driver may have gotten
corrupted.

Go to the Network and Sharing center and see if your wireless is
enabled (Network discovery should be 'ON'). Is the ONOFF switch on
your notebook on? Cycle it from off to on a couple times.

Go to the Network and Sharing Center, and make sure the connection it
is using is the correct one, and that NETWORK DISCOVERY is turned on.
You can click on Manage Wireless Networks or Manage Networks to enable/
disable and otherwise manage the connections.

Click start/run/cmd

At the command prompt, type in IPCONFIG /ALL

If it returns a result, see what it says. There should be a long list
of settings.

Find the Default Gateway address, should be 192.168.1.1

Then PING 192.168.1.1 (or whatever the default gateway is)

If that works, that means your computer can talkt to the router.

Then at the command prompt type in IPCONFIG /RELEASE and hit the enter
key, then do IPCONFIG /RENEW and hit the enter key

Did you accidentally switch off the Wireless capability?

No that was the first thing I checked.
