My father has a desktop running Windows Vista which he connects to the
internet through comcast high speed modem. He suddenly lost internet
connection and comcast came out with a laptop and verified that the
modem is fine and the problem is with his desktop. My dad claimed the
guy tried some things but couldn't get a connection, and that since
comcast's responsibility is only to confirm that THEIR equipment is
working, there was nothing he could do. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi.
If unplugging the modem, wait for 20 seconds, plug it in again and reboot
does not solve it, try the following.
unplug the modem.
Open device manager right click on the comcast modem and uninstall it.
also uninstall your ethernet card.
re-boot your PC
when windows loads it will automatically re-install your ethernet card.
plug in your comcast modem
go into local area network connections
choose set up a connection.
"or insert the disk that came with your comcast modem if you have one"
If you dont have the disk, choose set up a connection manualy
choose "this computer connects directly to the internet"
If you need a user name and password to connect to the internet choose the
option " My provider requires me to log in,
otherwise choose " this computer uses a connection that is always on.
If you have other computers connecting to the internet via the pc in
question, choose " this computer connects directly to the internet, other
computers connect via this computer.
reboot, and that should be it
