I am unable to install the referenced update. It gets to 99% and my computer
freezes up. Any ideas on what to do ?

Howdy Jorovi,

Show hidden files, folders, and System files :
http://snipurl.com/f4cx

Create a new folder in My Documents or on the Desktop and name it IEBak.
Navigate to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.
Move all of the contents of Uninstall Information to IEBak.

Now run the update again. If you're using Windows 98/ME, boot to Safe
Mode and install it from there :
http://snipurl.com/dmbp

If IE 6 SP1 installs you can delete the entire IEBak folder and it's
contents. If not, move the contents back to Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Uninstall Information and delete the *empty* IEBak folder.

Thanks for the suggestion whioch I will try. However there are a couple of
things I need you to clarify for me.

What do you mean by "show hidden files, folders, and system files "? what
must I do ?

When you say "move all of the contents of Uninstall Information to IEBak" do
you mean "cut and paste" the files ?

What do you mean by "Now run the update again. If you're using Windows
98/ME, boot to Safe
> Mode and install it from there :

FYI am running Windows Me.

Sorry for the stupid questions but I am trying to learn ! Ill await your
reply before proceeding.

Thanks !!

By any chance did you reinstall Windows ME without having first uninstalled
IE6 SP1?

That's why I provided this link : http://snipurl.com/f4cx
You must have missed it.

That will do.

What you're experiencing from installing IE6 SP1 is typical for Win ME
systems that have Norton AV/Norton Utilities/NIS installed. If you've
downloaded IE6 SP1, than run the setup.exe from within Safe Mode to
avoid interference by any Norton "product". If you are attempting this
from the Windows Update site, suggest you download the full setup
package or use the steps laid out here to obtain it :

You're welcome, Jorovi. The only stupid questions are the ones not
asked

Mowgreen, thanks again for your reply.

FYI I am not running Norton Anti Virus. In fact I had McAfee but I removed
the program thinking that it would be the only way to the download IE6SP1.
That did not work, so Itried reloading the Mcafee anti virus and that will
not load back. I have spent hours with McAfee techs, but nothing ! In any
event figure I would try downloading IE6SP1 and here I am with this problem.
Now that I have provided you with this additional information I better wait
till you can analyze and suggest the next step...Thanks again..Jorovi

I am going to go ahead and try your suggestions and see what happens.
Meantime wanted to advise that I have tried to download the McAfee free virus
scan (I had removed my copy from my computer) to check to see If I had a
virus and have not been able to do that. When Active X control tries to
download my computer (browser) freezes ! Any Ideas ?

Look forward to your comments.

Thanks !

Have you attempted installing IE 6 SP1 yet? Not sure what the issue is
with McAfee. Try running CleanUp :
http://www.stevengould.org/software/.../download.html

Running CleanUp will clear out the Temp folder, for one thing. Then
reinstall Windows Script 5.6
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Now try to reinstall McAfee.
