Which OS?
What error messages?
What route (from Windows Update, a CD, a download?)

I am using Windows ME. The download came via windows update. The error
message occured after download, install finished and restarted back to the
desktop. Message indicated that some components could not be installed and to
run setup again (after another restart). This sets up an endless series of
restarts and installation failures. I got out of this by deleting the" run
setup" shortcut that was in the startup folder. Some components are still not
installed and Windows update continues to identify Explorer 6 Service Pack1
as a recommended critical download for my system, yet my installation history
indicates that I have successfully completed that update.

Ah - I rather suspected that it might be ME!
A not terribly unusual problem - but incredibly annoying if you hit it

This is the 'usual fix' - from MVP Mow Green

"Try this : Create a temporary folder and name it IEBak.
Enable show hidden files and folders via Folder Options in the
Control Panel.
Then, using Windows Explorer, navigate to
Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.
Move all of the files from that folder to IEBak.
DO NOT Delete the folder.
Now try running IE's setup again.
If it installs, delete the temp folder IEBak AND it's contents.
If it does not, move all of the files back to
Uninstall Information and delete IEBak.

What you are experiencing is a known issue usually caused by 3rd
party software, especially Norton AV, System Works, etc.
If you've downloaded the full IE 6 setup package advise you to boot
to Safe Mode and first attempt an install from there."

Yes, Yes, that fixed the problem and the update install completed. I actually
had deleted the old download files, so I performed a new download and the
install completed without a hitch (after the explorer uninstall files had
beem moved of course).
Thank you!!!

This worked for me. Thank you!

I will now install my Norton. Good thing I didn't do it before this
procedure!

I had the same problem.Try this:Go to My Computer-tools-folder options-view
select"show hidden files and folders-click OK.
R-click an empty spot on your desktop and create a new folder-name it"old
uninstall"
Go to C:-Program Files-IE-Uninstall info.
click Edit-select all
click cut(all files)
Open the folder you created and paste all of it into your new file.
Try the updates again and if it works you can delete all the old junk.
