Internet Explorer 6 7 & 8

When a user trys to connect to an https site via a desktop shortcut, internet
explorer crashes. It can connect to the website if internet explorer is open
and the address is typed in the address bar though. Using IE 6, 7, or 8 the
problem persist. Disabling and enabling add-ons have been tried, as well as
using different windows operating systems. Is this a bug or is there away to
get the the clients workstation to connect to the https site via the desktop
shortcut
