I am trying to update to v6 as it is required to upgrade to Messenger 7.
However I seem to be in a loop.Internet won't install because a message says
that I need to reboot to let an earlier update (of IE 6) install.
When i reboot the earlier install does not take place.
I cannot uninstall IE 6 as it does not appear in Add /Change programs.
Can you advise?

J,

Show hidden files, folders, and system files :

Navigate to the WINDOWS directory.
Locate and then open Wininit.ini
If there is anything listed besides [Rename], then delete it.
[Rename] should be the only entry now.
Click File, Save, and then close Wininit.ini
Restart the system

Now see if IE 6 SP1 will install. If no joy, please see these MSKB
articles :

Error Message: The Installation/Removal of a Previous Program Was Not
Completed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214643

Error Message: A Previous Program Installation Was Never Completed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221863

If you edit the registry, make sure that you back it up first so that it
can be restored.

I found this on another discussion group.
Editing the registry appears to be beyond my capability , couldn't find...
HKEY_Local_MACHINE
Did delete temporary internet files .

Same message about a previous install comes up.

If the error message is any one of these 3 :

" The installation/removal of a previous program was not completed.
Setup must restart your computer before proceeding with Installation.
After windows has been restarted, please run setup again to complete
installation "

" A previous program installation was never completed. You need to
restart your computer to complete that installation before running
Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close. "

" Windows Update Setup

A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart
your computer to complete that installation before running Internet
Explorer Setup. Setup will now close. "

Then go to Start, Run, type in

regedit

Click OK

Click the plus sign next to My Computer.
Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click the plus sign next to that
Click the plus sign next to System
Click the plus sign next to CurrentControlSet
Click the plus sign next to Control
Click *on* the Session Manager folder
In the right frame, look for PendingFileRenameOperations
Right click PendingFileRenameOperations and choose Delete

Close the registry editor. Restart the system.
Now see if IE will install.
If PendingFileRenameOperations is not present, close the registry editor
*** without *** changing anything, please.

Did you open the wininit.ini file and check to see that this is the only
entry ? [Rename]
It will be located in the WINNT folder. You must show hidden files,
folders, and system files to be able to see it.

No luck with either of these.
wininit.ini is not in either the Windows or Winnt directories .

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System there is a CurrentControlSet001 and 002 as well
but none of the directories have PendingFileRenameOperations .

I have renamed /deleted two Windupdate files in the Windows
directory....bingo I appear to be in .

Thnx and Regards
