Internet Explorer 6 SP1 installation problems

I am attempting to update to IE6 SP1 (I have Windows ME) & successfully
downloaded the update, however when I went to install it, it froze half way
through the process & since then I have not been able to successfully install
it. Everytime I reboot, the setup box reappears indicating the setup had not
previously finished, but still fails to fully install after going through the
process again!

It gets to about 90% complete and then a message appears saying "setup was
unable to install all the components. Please close all applications & try
running setup again" - even though all applications are closed !

I have referred to previous posts and answers and have had no luck in fixing
this problem. I have been trying to install the latest version of Messenger
7.0, but I apparently need IE6 SP1 for it to work ?? The following is from

Here's a method to get it installed on Win ME :

Show hidden files, folders, and system files

Right click the Desktop and select New, Folder. Name the new folder IEBak.
Navigate to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
Move ALL of the files from there to the newly created folder, IEBak.
Boot to Safe Mode http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=180902
Now run the upgrade for IE6 SP1.
Restart the system to normal Windows mode. If IE installs successfully
you can delete the entire IEBak folder. If it doesn't, move all of the
files back from IEBak to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
Information and then delete the *empty* IEBak folder.
