Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 failed to install

1. I am using XP SP2 (Home Edition). I therefore chose the version, Internet
Explorer 7 Beta 3 for Windows XP SP2 to download.

2. As I was using IE 7 Beta 2 previously, I first uninstalled it before
installing Beta 3. However, an Error message was displayed 'Internet Explorer
7 could not be installed. You must restart your system to confirm that any
changes to your system are undone.
After restarting, follow the "Internet Explorer Troubleshooting" shortcut on
your desktop to get more information.'

3. I clicked the Troubleshooting shortcut. It led me to KB917925 Article on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925. I followed Method 1 instructions. But
there was no "Key is still unwriteable" text in the Ie7beta3.log file.
Instead, I noted from the log "...124.469:
DoRegistryUpdates:UpdSpInstallFromInfSection Failed for
ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x5
124.469: INF_REGISTRY Failed
124.469: DoInstallationoRegistryUpdates failed ..."

4. I did not proceed to Method 2 of KB917925 because that Method is related
to Cryptographic Services whereas my problem seemed to be a Registry problem.

5. Microsoft issued KB917925 Article on June 29 when IE 7 Beta 3 was first
released to the public. Microsoft apparently was expecting that some who
would like to use the new IE browser could not install it successfully. I
think I was just one of the fall guys.

6. I would appreciate it very much if I could be given advice on what Error
Code 0x5 is, and more importantly on means to resolve the issue in order that
I may install IE 7 Beta 3 successfully.

I also am using XP SP2(home edition). I was running IE 7 Beta 2 previously
without any problems. IE7 Beta 3 failed to install for me as well. Are there
any people that built IE 7 Beta 3 out there following this thread that would
find a copy of my ie7beta3.log helpful to resolve this problem. I am not
comfortable with running regedit. Thanks in advance for your time and
attention.
Would any programs from the Sysinternals Freeware suite help to install IE 7
Beta 3 without editing the registry. I have used one of the utilities from
the suite of programs in the past to solve a previous install issue. Please
advise. Thanks-

"floridafuzz" and other friends who are experiencing a similar installation
problem,

1. I am not familiar with what "floridafuzz" mentioned in respect of "
Sysinternals Freeware." Will "floridafuzz" throw some light on this Freeware
if it is appropriate to the solution of the problem under discussion please?
Like "floridafuzz", I too am not comfortable with editing Registry items just
for the sake of installing a Beta program.

2. In the KB917925 Article, one of two possible causes of failure to
install IE 7 Beta 3 was stated as, and I quote, "Something has caused the
computer not to trust the Internet Explorer 7 installation package." If
NOTHING in the Beta 3 software is wrong, why would ANY computer not trust the
installation package? Microsoft's own statement is quite indicative that
Microsoft is NOT quite comfortable about the installation package itself.
Something is NOT quite right somewhere!

3. "floridafuzz" and I were just 2 fall guys, among others, of IE 7 Beta 3.
Grateful for help please.

1. Thank you for your pointers. When the WGA requirement (KB892130) came
into effect, I had no problem in installing the program. I think our present
problem may not be the same, though may be similar. We were able to download
IE 7 Beta 3. (David Arnstein and Mr Bill could not even download the WGA
program.) We were only UNable to install it!

2. In my view, there were 3 possibilities: (a) a Permissions issue; (b) 1 or
more missing files in our computers; (c) the Microsoft IE 7 Beta 3 download
containing corrupted components.

3. In my own case, I believe (a) was the most likely. In this relation, I
had downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Registry Diagnostic Tool for Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 released May 3, 2006
.. After installation, a window showed to say "No problems found." The irony
of the matter was that the Diagnostic Tool was supposed to verify that the
current user had the permissions required to install IE 7 Beta 2. As "no
problems were found," I should have had the necessary permissions to install
Beta 3. (I had been using Beta 2 previously.) Well, I throw my hands up.
However, you may wish to note that there is that Diagnostic Tool and may wish
to install it to verify your permissions.

4. (b) is less likely because gauged from the contents of the ie7beta3.log
the apparent cause was 0x5 (Access Denied?). (c) is possible but unlikely. (I
had re-downloaded the program thrice, ending up with the same result, i.e.
failure to install.)

I also attempted to run it twice with no success-that is why there are two
post to the log-
If you look at my log- does it help in solving the problem?

I have emmigrated my IE 7 Beta 3 problem to
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&lang=en&cr=us
because that destination appears to be a more appropriate home. You may
consider doing similarly. There you will find some earlier posts on the
Subject. Some users had been able to install Beta 3 successfully by use of
Safe Mode.

There is your problem: an incorrect permissions issue in your registry.
This sort of registry corruption can occur through use of certain
third-party security applications, or by other accidents/crashes causing
registry corruption.

Google for "Dial-a-fix", download the archive, run the self-extracting
archive, then run Dial-a-fix from the extracted contents. Click "Tools".
Select "Repair permissions", click "Go". It will take a long time.
