People often take the opportunity while installing a new hard drive of
reinstalling everything to get a fresh system. But if the only reason you had
to reinstall everything is that you got the new hard drive, there are plenty
of solutions out there that make the whole process much easier, and which you
can do yourself (i.e., save both time and money).
Apricorn (
http://apricorn.com/product_detail.php?type=reg&id=1023) is just
one example of a possible solution. This is the one I used. You buy the kit
($50) and a new hard drive. You put the new hard drive in the kit enclosure,
plug it into the USB port, and run the software on the CD.
Voila! Your old hard drive is now on your new hard drive. Simply replace the
old hard drive with the new one when you are done, and boot. No backing up of
files, not reinstallation of the OS and software, no endless update cycles to
reinstall all of the patches and fighting to find all of the appropriate
drivers (often painful!).
Best of all, you can put the old drive into the enclosure and you now have a
portable USB drive. The whole thing not only costs less than having the new
drive installed, but you have the portable USB drive to boot!
