Internet Explorer Hanging on Windows Update

Hi,

I have Windows XP SP 2 and Internet Explorer SP2.

I'm having a problem with accessing the Windows Update site. If I
select WIndows Update from the tools menu or follow the link from the
Microsoft Home Page then Internet Explorer hangs. It shows the Windows
Update URL in the Address bar, and the words "Microsoft Update" appear
in the title bar. But then, it hangs up completely and that Internet
Explorer window is unusable. I have kill it via the task manager.
Other Internet Explorer windows continue to function and other updates
(e.g. Office Update) work fine.

The auto Windows Update within XP has also stopped working. It
downloads until 17% and then hangs up.

The end of my Windows Update log looks like this:

2006-03-30 15:00:29 1476 3b8 DnldMgr * ServiceId =

Alfie,

Go to Start, Run, type in

eventvwr.msc

Click OK.
Click on System in the left frame.
In the right frame, under Source, look for Windows Update Agent or,
under Type, look for a red circle with an X across it.
Double click any Error listed for Windows Update Agent to see details.
Click the File icon under the arrows at the top right to copy the
details and post them into your response, please.
Here's a sample of an Error copied from the Event Viewer :

Event Type: Error
Event Source: atapi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 9
Date: 3/31/2006
Time: 9:43:54 AM
User: N/A
Computer: C4xxxxxxxxx
Description:
The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Have done this.

There are no entries listed for Windows Update Agent...

Then you'll need to show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

After doing so, navigate to the WINDOWS\Software Distribution folder.
Open the ReportingEvents.log and scroll down towards the bottom for the
most recent entries.
Look for a section that contains an error code and post back with what
you locate.
The section will appear as :

{8AC51616-FC3C-4A05-80AD-CE4B58C038A7} 2006-03-30 09:49:15-0800 1
147 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 AutomaticUpdates
Success Software Synchronization Agent has finished detecting items.

Which firewall and antivirus software is installed ? If either has a
script blocking component advise you to temporarily disable it before
attempting to access Windows/Microsoft Update.
