Everytime I open Internet Explorer and it opens to Microsoft Update. I check
to see if there is anything to install there is nothing. I have a look at the
historical updates one has been cancelled back in 2005 but this shows up on
add/remove programs as being installed which is update 896688. I run Windows
XP home, Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 SP 2. This problem didn't start
happening until 2 weeks ago.

Any ideas

Open IE

Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab

One of the first settings is "automatically check for internet
explorer updates"

Uncheck it

Press "OK"

That'll fix it

IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > Automatically check for IE updates (uncheck).

NB: Anti-malware tools like Ad-Watch, Spybot (Tea Timer; Immunize) and Spysweeper have settings which may prevent changes such as the above from "sticking".

snip

You got Automatic Updates switched on?

The only other fix I know is use Firefox as your default browser and
avoid opening IE6 altogether.
