Internet Explorer Problem in Vista

I have been having a problem with IE on my Vista computer. I can acces
the internet just fine, but I can't download/open files. For instance,
go to Firefox to download it. Everything looks like it is downloadin
fine, but when it is done, there is no file. I have tried to both "save
and "run" the download & neither work. Both end the process like it i
working fine, but then nothing happens. When I am on AOL through IE,
try to open an attached file & same thing happens. It runs like it i
going to open, but then nothing happens. I can't switch to a differen
browser because I can't download it to get it working on my computer
HELP

And that's where the problem seems to be, an apparent conflict between the
two browsers.
Exactly the reason why I am reluctant to activate my Firefox: for fear of
interference.
Should this fear be unfounded, I'ld be open for suggestions to the contrary.
