Internet Explorer shuts down and restarts

Hi All

Having had an unstable XP when I upgraded to Vista, I had to opt eventually
to back up files, then format my C:\ (wipe the old OS) and then reinstall
Vista from scratch. I have a lot of drive space, software installed, so I
really try hard to avoid reinstalling again and again, mainly as its fairly
quick putting Windows back on, but the time taken resetting up everything
else I try to avoid.

Having had a stable PC for a week or two and then allowing Vista to download
updates when needed, I have not installed anything on here between the week
it was last stable and the problem I am experiencing now.
I currently have Norton 360, which keeps all dodgy spyware out, its running
with Defender, plus I have external software in the form of Spybot S & D,
Spyware Blaster, Spyhunter to name a few!
The symptoms initially were IE7 displaying "Internet Explorer is not
responding" then a pause, and "Internet Explorer is restarting", sometimes
even closing down the restarted IE7 starts it round again!
All the spyware, virus software has been run over the PC regularly (all
those listed above and others!) and fail to find the villain, initially it
was moaning that NTDLL.DLL was causing the fault, however with the spyware
cleaning, its now stuck and only restarts on MSXML3 being the reason for the
fault and restart, I have installed NET 3.5 beta 2, although I notice
(Although I didnt install it) NET 1 is installed, so I assume some
application I have needs it or installs it as default. Question: Do you need
all progressive NETs installed? i.e. if you have 3.5 installed, do you need
1.0?

The problem hasnt gone away, Microsoft have had a ticket raised about 7 days
ago, at present I am working to get/arrange a suitable time for them to call
me when I am in front of the PC, since its the evening UK time, so I have to
work with their support help desk who run at different times.

I did a lot of digging on the web re the MSXML problem, so far I have found
one message from someone to say they had the same problem, the PC was stable
after a rebuild, but after a week of updates it did what my PC is doing, it
seems to be "hardware, PC specific".

Any ideas or comments / suggestions re fixing the problem? since its driving
me nuts since it tends to restart in the middle of my completing a form for
an online purchase or something!!

I can post the exact error messag from the event viewer if needed.

The problem may be some IE add-on software. If it's not spyware or a virus,
it wouldn't be picked up by such applications as you mention. The add-on
might simply be poorly written or might be conflicting with something else
on your setup. Go to the Start Menu, Accessories\System Tools\Internet
Explorer (no add-ons). Run it for a bit and see if you have the problem.
If no, the problem is quite likely an add-on. Open Control Panel\Internet
Options, Programs, click the Manage Add-Ons button, disable add-ons one by
one, running IE after each item disabled until you find the add-on that is
causing the problem.

If you have the problem even with IE with no add-ons, did you have the
issue before installing the dot net beta? As far as I know, there is no
cumulative issue and you can have different versions on the system but that
doesn't mean the beta is not the source of the issue.

Microsoft support rang me this evening, they followed normal steps to clear
out my temp folder, personal temp folder, pre-fetch folder, local IE cache,
and also run the script to re-install certain DLLS. 5 mins after finishing
the call, I was using IE7 and the problem occured again. It is always
MSXML3.DLL that causes the problem, I uninstaled v3.5 beta since I had only
installed it to see if it updated the DLL which might fix the problem, since
it didnt I uninstalled it again - it was only a pre-release beta, so its not
a major issue or vital. There was also a MSXML.DLL SP2 in control panel
which I didnt install, but it was a KB item, I also uninstalled that as it
might have been that, since it was downloaded in the week that followed the
complete reinstall, I am sure Windows Update will pick it up again at some
point. The problem WAS there before the beta, so I downloaded the beta
hoping it might be a newer version and thus fix it, alas not.
I will run it with no add ons to see how things go, will keep you posted,
thanks for your help, I can post the event error file if needed.

i have just experianced a slightly differant problem-i downloaded spyhunter
3,to get rid of winantispyware 2007.thought this was a very good programme
from the description.unfortunatly it caused my internet explorer to refuse to
connect,would not do any thing except keep asking permisson to connect to
programs that i didn't want to use!only rectified this by removing it
totally!!this has still left behind win antispy program which is very
annoying!any suggestions?am using xp sp2

Ve haf malware.

I don't know this one, but it sounds like something close to some of the
nasties I saw at Dell.
See if you can download Superantispyware or Spysweeper free trial.
Or go to Safe mode with networking, and try there.

After doing the definition update- (if you can) shut down the system,
disconnect your ethernet cable, and run the program, so the nasty bit can't
get more help from the internet.

Good luck! I'd like to hear about other programs that are this thorough. I
don't particularly care for them on my machine, since they eat up a lot of
resources, but they do dig up most of the dirty stuff, and are easy to use.
(you can always remove them after) There's lots of techie tools out there,
but you need a lot of experience with them for proper use. If you have that
experience, you probably don't need them, so the GUI is important.
