Internet explorer - SP2

After udateing to service pack 2, my internet explorer was also updated to
version 6.0.2900 2180.xpsp_sp2_rtn and now every time I start my machine I
get a warning window saying something like there is already a newer version
of IE installed, installation ending ( something along those lines anyway )

IE seems to work fine, but this window is getting to be tiresome.

I was thinking that if I installed another update that it may go away, but
when windows checks for updates it tells me that there are no current updates
that I need.

How do I get rid of the warning window ?

Do a little digging to find what is being run at startup of Windows. You need to see if there is some leftover (from who knows what) that is being run at startup.

Go to Doug Knox/s website & get Startup Tracker 3.
http://www.dougknow.com
You will find it at http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_starttrack.htm

Then report back here.

Hi , I ran the utility you suggested and the only reference I could find was
the line-
"Resume Windows Update Instalation.Ink

I checked the properties and it is a shortcut to:
"C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files\ie6setup.exe"

Is my fix as simple as removing the reference in the startup file ?

Howdy Halifax,

YES! See if MSCONFIG shows this in The Startup Tab. If so, disable it.

Delete thes folder(s) and their contents:

C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files

C:\Windows Update Setup Files

These folders are typically found (for example) if the system was upgraded from Win98 to Win XP.
