Hello,

I upgraded (not fresh install) my home desktop from WinME to WinXP and since
then I am unable to connect to internet. I am connecting via LAN using cable
modem. It has been working fine before upgrade but am unable to connect since
upgrade. Here is my desktop info:

Compaq Presario S5005
Pentinum III 933 MHz
256 RAM
60 Gb Hard drive

My network card is "SMC EZ 10/100 SMC1211TX".

I have checked everything. Network connection is enabled and XP says
working. I am able to get IP address (tried ipconfig). It shows me a valid IP
address. I am unable to do "ipconfig /renew", it syas unable to renew IP
address. I am unable to connect to net via IE. I have checked all IE settings
and everything looks fine.

I have even tried to disable the LAN connection and re-enabled it with no
luck.

Can somebody pl. help me figure out where should I start? How to diagnose
and fix the problem? Any comments, suggestions or pointers will be much
appreciated.

Regards
Shail

What is allocating your TCP/IP address ... or rather what should be
allocating your TCP/IP address. When you do get one, what is it (just the
first few digits will do)

Thanks Cari for looking at it.

Initially my computer was connected to cable modem directly and the IP
address I was getting was allocated by Comcast. Then I tried it behind a
wireless router and IP address now is allocated by Belkin router. The current
IP address it shows is 192.168.2.80 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and default
gateway 192.168.2.1. In both cases it is configured for DHCP.

PS: I have two other computer with WinXP connected to same router and
everything is working fine on those.

Thanks
Shail
