Internet problems after SP2 on XP

I recently installed the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP
(home edition) on my mom's computer. The installation
went fine and system rebooted fine.
After rebooting the sound didn't work, so we got the
update for the sound card and that is fine now.

Today my mom's computer can not go on line. No mail, no
surfing. Nothing. She called the internet service
provider (cable connection) and after talking to two
service techs they determined it is a problem with XP SP2.
Something in Windows is blocking her ability to go on line
she was informed.
Nothing she does or they told her to try would work.

What can she do to either get rid of this fabulous SP2
update or update the update and get on back on line?
She is 400 miles from me and not a whiz on the computer.
So any help would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time;
Linda

It could be TCP/IP filtering is locked down. Open the connection,
select TCP/IP properties, General tab, Advanced properties, Options tab,
TCP/IP filtering properties, Check Enable filtering and change Permit
Only to Permit All. HTH.

Permit all was already checked. Thank you for the idea
but it still not working. :-(
Any other ideas?

I am running a home network with two computers. I
connect to the internet through a cable provider through
a cable modem. I am running McAfee firewall and Norton
anti-virus software. Two weeks ago I loaded XP Service
Pack 2. When I did, I could not connect to my internet
connection. I restored the computer to an earlier date
prior to the Service Pack install, and all was fine
again. I later loaded service pack again, and
encountered the same problem. I disabled the XP firewall
hoping this would solve problem, but it still could not
connect to internet. I once again have restored to an
earlier date and am back online. I am afraid to install
service pack 2 again. Can you advise?

im having a similar problem linda.....best thing would be
to wait until someone comes out with an answer for this
problem. however here is a solution for the time being
which im managing with - from start menu goto system
tools - select system restore and select the date restore
point when sp2 was installed and restore back computer
to the original state the internet will start working
nevertheless u wont have sp2 in ur system. i have done
same thing and managing without sp2. Atleast my work is
not getting interrupted.....im definite tht works.
