Internet protection

I just uninstalled the McAffee Security Center that came with my laptop
and installed AVG antivirus instead. Is there anything else I need to do
to complete the basic protection of my system?

Did you install the AVG free or the paid full version ?. Why did you
remove MCafee Security Center ??. No software can claim that it can
offer complete protection to your system from such threats but you have
to take some additional steps to protect yourself. Installing just an
anti virus will not do.Lemme know as what you do mostly while you are
online ? what type of internet connection have you got (Broadband /
Dialup/Wireless).

Because the free subscription was about to expire, and because in the
past McAffee had charged me automatically $70 for a yearly subscription.

AVG free is a fairly good antivirus program and should suffice with your
browsing as long as you practice "safe-surfing." No antivirus program will
protect you if you do not practice safe-surfing. There are a lot of people
who also like Avast. In it's earlier versions, I had issues with updating on
two of my 5 computers and so dumped it for AVG which ran without problems.

You need to ensure that your Vista firewall is functioning. It, again will
normally be enough to protect from the hacker's attempts to infiltrate your
system. There are free firewalls available to replace the Vista one if you
decide to go that route.
I use Zone Alarm from CheckPoint software:

on all my systems as it is free and it does a good job of blocking
outsiders. The only issue I have is the occasional failure of the program
to remember approved use of the intra or internet by some of my programs.

You also need to occasionally run mal-ware checkers. I use Spybot search
and destroy, Malware bytes and Ad-aware which can all be downloaded and
installed from these sites:

There are others out there but again, be careful what you get and where you
get it from.

I heartily agree that you need to uninstall McAfee as it, as well as
Norton's programs, are resource hogs. I have always had issues with McAfee
not finding malware that even AVG found.

You forgot MalwareBytes and Spybot Search & Destory too!

free ) , Superantispyware ( bought ) , Malwarebytes antimalware ( free
) and a few other free programs .

Yes, format your hard drive to get rid of Windows and move up to a real
operating system that doesn't require anti virus or anti malware
programs. I recommend Ubuntu as it is really user friendly. Get it FREE
at http://www.ubuntu.com/. Not only is it free, it comes with access to
thousands of free programs like Firefox, Open Office, Thunderbird and
much, much more.

For a home user :

Avast Home - turn off unused shields.
Windows Defender
SmartScreen Filter (in IE8)
Run IE8 in Protected Mode and with InPrivate Filtering as the default
(registry entry)
Prevx 3.0 Free (you can add this with AVG also)
UAC on or in Quiet Mode
Windows Firewall
Set InPrivate Filtering at AUTO or Prompt and use the converted AdBlocker
File.
Windows UpDates ON however set Advanced System Settings - Hardware Tab -
Windows Update Driver Settings - Never Check for Drivers when I connect a
Device (always go to a device makers site and manually look for updated
drivers).

Even more secure would be to use InPrivate Browsing all the time.

The security built into Vista is so integrated that many programs just get
in the way.

Use SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes as Scanners Only, nothing resident.
Though mine has never caught anything except an occasional cookie.

There are other scenarios however this one is extremely tight
