internet slow as molasses

I have Windows XP. I have done disk clean up and defrag. I have dial up - the
internet has never been this slow - it just recently starting becoming
unbelievable slow.

I looked into Windows Updates - I have had it on automatic so I assumed it
was doing it (everytime I logged on, it said it was updating...). But when I
looked at history, most everything had been denied or canceled.

So 1) I'm wondering if the updates have anything to do with the internet
becoming so slow.
And 2) if it does, should I go back and try to redownload all those updates?
It says I'm up-to-date...
And 3) Service Pack 2 was one that was canceled. Would that be a source of
any of this?

The #1 cause of the behaviors you describe is hijackware.

1. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

2. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill
of health.

try cleaning out all temporary internet files. you r on dial-up?? try
out ONSPEED. its an intenet accelerator product, proven to speed up
dial-up to up to 10 times. although i'm on broadband, it speeds up my
surfing speed as well. yes, broadband is fast, but i don't mind being
faster Also, it sits quietly in your pc/laptop, and flexible enough
for you to turn it on or off.

check it out, there's a free trial version now, at
http://www.onspeedasia.com
