Hi, yesterday my internet worked fine (LAN line plugged into the back of a
linksys wireless router), it had downloaded and installed several updates and
when i booted up this morning there was no connection to the internet. It
keeps telling me its a server error (repair and diagnose) but i plugged in my
Laptop (running xp) in the same manner and it works fine. I tried removing
the updates and restarting but it still doesnt work. I cant get any new
updates since i no longer have a connection, is there a way to download
updates on another computer and load them on the my one with vista? Would
that be a solution? Thanks for any help.

I should clarify that the computer with the problem is running VISTA. . .

It would be a great help to others if you could list what updates had been
installed. Did you install any optional updates for any of your hardware
devices? You should not install these from Microsoft but directly from the
website of the device manufacturer themselves (an exception to this is
obviously hardware manufactured by Microsoft). You might also like to try
rolling back the driver for the network device. To do this, press and hold
the start key on the keyboard and then pause/break. You should arrive at a
screen giving basic information about your computer. In the left hand panel
there should be a number of tasks. Click on Device Manager, and in the UAC
box that appears, select the name and enter the password of the account that
you used when first installing Vista. When the Device Manager appears, click
on Network adapters then double click the adapter that is listed. In the
properties page, select Driver and then select Roll Back Driver. Follow the
instructions and then restart your computer. With a bit of luck, you should
be back on-line. Please note that it might not be necessary to restart your
machine, but I would recommend that you did so to ensure that the driver is
loaded into memory and functioning correctly. Please let people know how you
get on.

Hey, thanks for the reply, i tried to roll back the drivers and that didnt
work. I think the updates that messed it up were KB933579 or KB936021 . . .
the security updates. It may have also been the Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 7 (KB937143) all three of those installed the night
before my computer stopped working . . . Ive been trying just about
everything, must have restarted my computer tons of times. Im thinking about
a system restore . . .
Sorry for the late response, been really busy.

Try system restore, if necessary from safe mode. When you have Internet
access again, use the procedure as described in my post 'Problematic Updates
in Windows Vista', also in this newsgroup, to install any outstanding
updates. Do not install any optional updates or any updates for hardware
(other than for Microsoft hardware) from Microsoft - instead update these
from the hardware manufacturers website directly. I would strongly advise you
not to update the firmware for your router if it is working correctly as an
incorrect update might be the last thing that the router does.
If this doesn't work, then try again but this time install the updates one
at a time.

I have been having this problem for a few weeks now. Sadly the only way i
have found to fix it is to just reinstall vista. Please if anyone has a fix
to this let us know. I have Vista and everytime i update it the wireless card
in the laptop wont even come on anymore like its not even there.

Had the same problem after an auto-update in Vista. The router worked for a
year without a problem with Windows XP; unfortunately had to buy a new
computer and thus Vista came with it. Spent 1-1/2 hours each with tech
support from linksys and DSL provider...both blame the other, and deny it is
a Vista compatibility problem.

I dont think this is a problem with the routers at all. i myslef have
the same problem on a laptop with vista. everytime i install vista
updates the wireless card totaly cuts off like its not even there. the
only way i have found to fix this is to just reinstall vista and dont
install the updates. if anyone has a fix please tell. but this isnt a
router problem its vista not reconizing the wireless card or anything
else for that matter

Got the Linksys router to work again. Connected router to another computer
with Windows XP and tried to install the router from scratch using the router
setup wizard CD, but the router was still unable to connect to the internet.
Resetting the router to "factory default" setting appeared to solve the
problem(the physical reset button on back of router did not help), and
allowed the router to complete setup and work with Windows XP. Router still
works so far (about 1 hour) after reconnecting it to the computer with
Windows Vista.

Factory default setting is under the "Administration" menu in Linksys
router. Access Linksys router by typing the IP address in you web browser
(default IP is 192.168.1.1).

Yea, it sounds like we all have similar problems. My computer was fairly
new, so i just did a quick back-up and then did a complete system restore
(back to factory settings). I still couldnt get any internet recognition so
i called my DSL provider and they reset the modem and we bypassed my router
etc. They said that from their end the modem wasnt even showing a connection
to my computer. After ruling out bad cables and other things, they said it
must have been something with my computer, so i took it in to a local store
to test the hardware. They plugged it in and it connected to the internet
right away . . . They said its most likely a compatibility issue with the
modem. I took it home and now it works. I dont know what happened. I wish
i could be more helpful, but thats my story . . .
