Interupted downloads

When I try to download a rather large file from windows update, it fails
because of internet interupted connections. When I retry, sometimes it
resumes from the last point, continues then fails. Other times it just
starts over from the beginning. Anyone know where these files temporarily
reside on hard drive while they download so that I can manually save it
periodically. Thanks for you input.

Hello Karljai,

I have had the same problem.

MS advised me to get onto my ISP which put me onto changing the "Idle Time"
setting to "Never", it was on 20 minutes.
I clicked on START, Connect to, Show all Connections, Right clicked on my
ISP, Properties, Options, and there was the Idle Time box.
Not sure if this sequence varies between ISP's.
My ISP also advised me of a code to put in front of its dialup phone number
to block call waiting interfearence and to make sure the modem speed was set
to the level of my modem (57,600). I have just had a look at that and it has
gone back to 115,200, so I not sure what is going on there.

That did not solve the problem, however I discovered there was another
setting that had to have the "Disconnect if idle for (up to 59 minutes idle
time)" (that was set on 20 minutes) box unticked, which my ISP did not advise
me of, even though I had had 3 discussions with them about the matter.
In OE I clicked on the following: Tools, Options, Connection, Change,
Settings, Advanced and found the box to untick.

I was then able to download XP SP2, all 80MB or so of it. About 6 hours, I
think, with no interuptions.

Before getting on to these settings I had managed to stay on line for about
1½ hours while downloading MS Office 2003 update, by sending myself an e-mail
after every ¼hour or so.
I have been told downloading is not active time, so counts as idle time and
hence the disconnecting if your settings are not appropriate.

Have a huge problem, though, that seems to stem from the MS Office 2003
Update.
My Word and Excel are not working for me. MS sent me a program to remove the
update, but that has not solved the problem.
It seemed that there may have been some connection with earlier attempts to
download SPS2, which appear to have failed. After I managed to download it in
one shot, and went to install it an error message came up telling me "Control
ID not found", so that was the end of that.
I am waiting on MS Help to come back to my 9th e-mail to it.

I hope my notes above solve your problem.
If you can help with mine I would be most appreciative.

Regards,
JW

Windows XP SP2 is availabe on a free CD with free shipping from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

All previous critical updates are included and improved on. If you should
have to reinstall in the future, it would be nice not to have to go through
that long download again!
