Is there a way of changing the path in the services directory for the
svhost.exe file?
At present the path for the file is %fystemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k
netsvcs but it should be C:windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. I cannot
change it is it will not allow me to do it .Is there a way round this is this
will not allow me to do updates as it comes up file not found update error
number 0x80070002.

%systemroot%\system32 and C:\windows\system32 is the same address/location;
ditto for %windows%\system root

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

Is this a sudden, new problem?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Error message when you use the Windows Update Web site or Microsoft Update
Web site to install updates: "0x80070002"

The path you've posted, %fystemroot%\ is a clear indication that
malware was or *still* is present. Assuming your system is running
Windows XP and the Windows directory is located on C:\, the specific path is

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

The path can be changed by editing the registry but ONLY when *all*
malware has been removed.

Suggest you download, save, install, update, and then scan with
Malwarebytes anti-malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org

Click the " Download - free version " button.

I saw it as a typo...there were others; e.g., "it should be
C:windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs"

CDO poster anywho. $5 says we don't see him again.
