Windows Update is telling me that I need to install Office 2003 SP3.
However, I am running Office 2007 and have never had Office 2003 installed on
this machine. How do I get rid of this completely invalid update?

How sure are you that you have no Office 2003 components installed?
Viewers? some program that does not come with Office 2007 suites
(Frontpage? Visio? etc...)

Check to see if you have Office 2003 Web Components installed. If so, install the update.
You may have other Office 2003 stuff like Viewers etc.

I also am having the same update on my computer. So how do you know if you
should install it or not?

Check Add/Remove Programs CAREFULLY.
Look for something related to Office 2003.
There may be a reader or something else related to Office 2003.

In any case, installing the updates should not be a problem.

No viewers. No web components. I have Project 2007. I have Visio 2007.
Not a single, solitary thing that would have anything at all to do with
Office 2003. This machine was newly built 6 months ago and not a single
thing from Office or related to Office that was lower than the 2007 version
has ever been installed on this machine. This is absolutely an invalid
update for my machine. The problem is that it causes OneCare to sit in a
constant state of vulnerable, because this invalid update has not been
applied to my machine. I'm not about to apply something that is irrelevant.

My bet is that you are incorrect and *something* related to Office 2003 was
not only installed on your system, but is still there and is what triggered
the notification you have received to install Office 2003 SP3. While I
cannot say what component you have (many suggestions have been made) - it is
unlikely (albeit not impossible) that the detection of what you need
(especially in the case of Office 2003 service packs) is incorrect. You
didn't have to KNOW you were installing an Office 2003 component to have
installed an Office 2003 component. The common culprit for people who only
installed Office 2007 is the Office 2003 Web component...

However - if you don't want to install it - you do not have to. Visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install whatever base items you need
to in order to scan (custom) your system for updates. Go through the list
and uncheck the items you do not wish to install followed by expanding the
description of said update and checking the box to hide the update from your
sight.

Please don't treat me like I'm stupid. I've been doing this for a VERY long
time. I know exactly what is installed and what it not installed. I know
every component that is installed on my machine and what isn't. I do
development on this machine every day and keep a completely up to date
listing of every piece of software, every add-in, every ActiveX control, and
every driver installed, their versions and the date of the installation.

I was a SQL Server MVP for 4 years before asking to be removed from the
program, by my own choice. I've been beta testing Microsoft products for
over 10 years and I know exactly what it means to troubleshoot and isolate an
issue. I am only going to ask a question after I have already exhausted
everything else. I know that I don't have to install anything that hits
Microsoft update. While that is my personal choice, it is a complete
interference with OneCare, because OneCare does NOT recognize the fact that a
patch may be optional. Therefore, ANYTHING that pops up in Windows Update,
triggers a critical error within OneCare. With OneCare blaring at me that
there is a critical error, because of an invalid update, OneCare becomes
useless to me, because it is now impossible to tell if there is a problem
with something valid.

Since, it appears that I'm only going to get "check your system, because it
is impossible that Windows update is wrong", I'll quit asking since I'm
obviously not going to find a solution from anyone out here.

Wasn't treating you like you were stupid.

What you do is your decision. You have had suggestions, many good ones and
many that have proven themselves with others with the same issue you claim
to have. We all know that there isn't usually one solution that works for
everyone when it comes to computers - so your situation may very well be
unique - but not giving you all the options that have worked for others in
the same situation and asking you to double-check is not treating you any
different than anyone else - and it would be foolish NOT to do so when
troubleshooting.

OneCare has been worthless long before now in my opinion.

No one said it was impossible that Windows Update was wrong. If you
actually read and comprehend what I wrote instead of just taking offense
like you were being attacked (you were not) - you would have seen I said it
was possible that it was incorrect in your case... I only pointed out it
was highly unlikely. Did you know that Office 2007 Beta 2 did in fact
install Office Web Components 2003? Do you think it might still be a
component? *shrug* Maybe. If you searched before asking, you know that
others have had this issue and most of them ended up having the Office 2003
Web Component installed and did not know it - swearing that they have only
EVER had Office 2007 installed on their system...

Of course - you knew all that...
