Would an invalid licence key for XP stop Windows Upade from working ?

If so, how do I switch WU back on after the licence key has been changed for
a new valid key ?

SP-1 or SP-2 will not install with certain illegal keys but Windows
Update will still function.
Check the settings:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab.
Make selections as desired.
