Yes and no. There's a lot of factors involved with whether your IP might be seen by a
contact, what features you're using, which version of Messenger you're using / they're using
and so on.
Although I can't guarantee it completely, with just basic instant messaging, most if not all
connections just flow through the Messenger server.
If you're paranoid, you can just set the built-in Windows Firewall in Windows not to allow
Messenger. As the Windows Firewall only blocks incoming connections, it should at least
force everything through the Messenger server. However, again, no guarantee that the IP
address won't be revealed in a file transfer request or something.
