Hi, i was wondering if it was possible to get the IP address of a user with
whom you have had a converstaion with?
My friend had his laptop stolen and while on holidays yesterday, out of the
country and not on a computer he appeared online, obviously whoever had
stolen the lapop had turned it on and logged in automatically. I sent two IMs
unanswered to him before realising what was happening. So i was wondering is
it possible to retrieve information about the users location and thus catch
the bad guy?
Thanks alot.

Hello,
Jonathan Kay once said that you could find out their IP by letting you send
a file and running netstat in cmd.exe, so that their IP would be listed.
I think that normal conversations are running over the messenger servers, so
that there's no direct connection, and so you don't see their IP.

Yes, I thought that was the case, thanks for the response, what i guess i
would like to know though, is whether MSN would be able to give the IP
address out of the other party or not?
I imagine they keep this information along with the message history, so i
have the messages i sent and the time date etc, from that they should be able
to find more information on it, and if so would they release this data......

They might disclose to police the ip-ip data, but I doubt they keep message
histories.

Hello,
yes, as said, I don't know what's the legal situation about this where you
live, but I'm sure they won't disclose the IP information unless it is the
police.
