I would download ActiveSync 4.1
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...ivesync41.mspx) It has
a driver for the IPAQ. ( I just tried it with my 3630)

I thought ActiveSync 4.1 would not work with Windows 98 SE? Also will it
work with the IPAQ? The IPAQ is still running Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171?

At any rate, I had plans to uprade Windows 98 SE to Windows XP home edition
in the next few months. I am now considering doing this upgrade in the next
few weeks, hoping this will fix this activesync issue. The IPAQ should be a
matter of plug and play, not plug and struggle. Or will this create
different problems?

Sorry, AS 4.1 won't work on Windows 9X.

I believe that series is still supported in 4.1.

The problem you are hitting is that a driver is needed, which was shipped
with the device. We try to roll-up the OEM drivers into the next ActiveSync
install.

Please post, if you hit any issues.

CLOSING this issue.

There were two problems going on simultaneously.

When I upgraded from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Home Edition and ran
Activesync 3.8, I had similar problems except XP gives better diagnostics and
pointed towards problems with the USB connection. I found that when I added
the rules to NIS 2005 as outlined in your post AND really jammed the IPAQ
into the cradle (USB connector) AND held it, I was able to successfully
synch. As soon as I released the pressure, Activesync lost the connection.
So NIS 2005 was an issue (because I tried jamming the IPAQ into the cradle
before adding the rules) but so is the USB connector. I will be
investigating repair of the IPAQ.
